ABSTRACT

College students reported to have experienced high level of stress during their academic year. Studies within and outside the country have examined stress among students but there is no study locally addressing nursing students stress in the clinical area. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the stress level and sources of stress among nursing students in clinical practice as well as identifying the coping behavior utilized by students. The study involved 153 nursing students. Data were analyzed with the use of descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings revealed that most of the students in his study were 19 years or younger, females and second year college. Most of them had moderate level of stress. The most common stress factor are stress from assignment and workload and stress from taking care of patients. Most students used problem solving as their coping strategy. Furthermore, the study found no significant relationship between level of stress and coping behavior. It was concluded that majority of the nursing suffered from stress, therefore, there is a need for stakeholders to design programs that will reduce stress, health educate and encourage the students to utilize other healthy coping strategies to enhance health promotion.
