ABSTRACT
The use of language is not exclusive for interpersonal and conversational exchange. In school, books for technical and ‘cacti reference and lectures utilize a language that requires a student to have academic language proficiency to be able to process the materials intellectually. Filipino students encounter difficulty in this area so when they enter college or go to a university they are unprepared to tackle academic works. Hence, they need academic language proficiency. The main purpose of this research project is to describe CALLA as an instructional system designed to develop academic language skills in English for students in elementary and secondary level. it is also the aim of this paper to develop content-based lesson plans using CALLA lesson planning technique.
This paper is divided into two part, Part I consists of introduction, theoretical framework, review of related literature, discussion of academic difficulties of ESL/Bilingual learners, and analysis of the components of CALLA. Part II gives a brief over view of the CALLA lesson planning strategy and a compilation of content-based lesson plans covering different subject areas such us; Science, Mathematics, Language Arts, Social Studies, Values Education, Literature, Grammar, Reading, and Writing. The summary, conclusions, and recommendations are included in Part II. The appendices contain sample of materials on essay reading, jazz chants, self evaluation, and learning log.
